Theological / Devotional

If thy brother. A brother, a stranger, or a sojourner in need was to be relieved.

One who was comfortably situated must not take usury from a poor brother, nor make a profit on food sold to him (see on Ex. 22:25). Thus again is shown God’s care for the poor. God had delivered Israel from Egypt and was about to take them into the land of Canaan. As they had been the recipients of so much kindness, God wanted them to be kind to the unfortunate (see Matt. 10:8). Only thus could they receive God’s approval.
