Commentary on Leviticus 25:39

Theological / Devotional

Serve as a bondservant. An Israelite who had been sold to serve another was not to be treated as a slave but as a hired servant. He was not to be treated harshly, and was to be released in the year of jubilee. It was not necessary for a servant to await the year of jubilee to be redeemed. The law provided for his release after any six years of service, if he so desired (see Ex. 21:1-6).
