Commentary on Leviticus 8:2

Theological / Devotional

Chronologically, this chapter follows the last chapter of Exodus, which records the tabernacle’s erection. The seven intervening chapters contain instructions for Aaron and his sons before beginning sanctuary ministry.

Qualifications for priesthood included descent from Aaron, proven by genealogical registers (2 Chronicles 31:16-19; Ezra 2:62; Nehemiah 7:64), and freedom from physical deformity or ceremonial uncleanness. Priests abstained from wine and strong drink (Leviticus 10:8-10).

Priests approached God on behalf of the people (Leviticus 10:3; 21:17; Numbers 16:5), standing between a holy God and sinful people, thus must be holy. The high priest was called “saint of the Lord” (Psalm 106:16). His miter bore “Holiness to the Lord” (Exodus 28:36), and he bore the iniquity of holy things (Exodus 28:38).

Before beginning ministry, Aaron and his sons were solemnly set apart by anointing with holy oil and sprinkling at the tabernacle door.
