How readest thou? It was the lawyer’s business to know the answer to his own question. He was a professor of Jewish law, and as such it was entirely appropriate that he should be given the opportunity to answer. Jesus’ question does not necessarily imply a rebuke. It was a courtesy to give him an opportunity to answer his own question.
