Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Important textual evidence may be cited (cf. p. 146) for the omission of these words. For comment on the scribes and Pharisees see pp. 51, 52. For the word “hypocrites” see on Matt. 6:2.

Graves which appear not. Time had erased any outward evidence of the burial places, and men could “walk over them without knowing it” (RSV). Contact with the dead brought ritual defilement.
