Theological / Devotional

Treasure for himself. Any man who thinks and plans exclusively for himself lacks good sense (see on chapter 11:40) in the sight of God. The gospel of the kingdom is designed to take men’s thoughts away from self and direct them upward toward God and outward toward their fellow men. For the principle here involved see on chapter 12:15.

Toward God. That is, in the sight of God. The “fool” has no treasure laid up in heaven (see on Matthew 6:19-23).
