Theological / Devotional

Adversary. Greek antidikos, “an opponent [in a law suit],” hence “an enemy,” or “an adversary.”

Hale thee. Literally, “drag you down [forcibly].”

The officer. The one to whom the fine was to be paid. Inability to pay meant imprisonment. For the ancient custom of imprisonment for debt see on Matthew 18:25.
