Theological / Devotional

This thy son. An expression revealing contempt and sarcasm (see on chs. 14:30; 15:2). The older son disdains to own the younger son as his brother. Coldly he taunts his father by referring to his brother as “thy son.” Perhaps at heart he feels himself to be more righteous than either his father or his brother.

Hath devoured thy living. See v. 12.

With harlots. Whether the older brother knew this to be a fact concerning his younger brother or merely surmised that this had been the case is not stated.
