When they saw him. Mary and Joseph were “amazed” at that portion of the conversation between Jesus and the doctors of the law which they had overheard. But more than that, they were astonished at the appearance of Jesus. “On His face was a light at which they wondered. Divinity was flashing through humanity” (DA 81) for the first time, in testimony to the truth that the Son of man was none other than the Son of God (see on Matthew 1:1; Additional Note on John 1).

Thus dealt with us. Literally, “done thus to us?”

Thy father and I. For the last time in the entire gospel narrative Joseph is spoken of as the “father” of Jesus. Now that Jesus was aware of His relationship to His heavenly Father, it is appropriate that His earthly “father” should fade from the gospel picture (see on v. 51). The silence of the Scriptures concerning Joseph from this time forth suggests that he did not live to see the opening of Christ’s public ministry (see DA 145).
