Theological / Devotional

Not consented. Joseph and Nicodemus had not been summoned to the session of the Sanhedrin at which Jesus was tried and found guilty of blasphemy (DA 539, 699).

The omission was deliberate. The vote to condemn Jesus was unanimous (see on Mark 14:64). Had these two righteous men been present, they certainly would have raised their voices in protest, as they had on former occasions (see DA 460, 539, 699, 773; see on John 7:50, 51).

A city of the Jews. An explanatory note probably added by Luke for the benefit of his non-Jewish readers (see p. 664).
