Ought not? Rather, “was it not necessary?” The prophets had foretold the sufferings of Messiah (see on v. 27). Jesus Himself had repeatedly foretold His sufferings and death (see on ch. 18:31). In addition, He had given as His reason for telling them, that the fulfillment of His predictions would be a basis for faith — that, when the event came to pass, they might believe (see on John 13:19; 14:29). Instead of bringing disappointment, the death of Jesus should have proved a great confirmation of faith. Strangely enough, whereas the crucifixion destroyed the hopes of the disciples in Jesus as the Messiah, it provided Joseph and Nicodemus with convincing proof of that great truth (see DA 772, 775, 776).
