Theological / Devotional

Soldiers, likely Jewish mercenaries serving Herod Antipas, asked John if they could qualify for the kingdom. John told them to exercise justice and mercy, not to extort or misuse power.

“Demanded” means asked.

“What shall we do?” with emphasis on “we” suggests soldiers joined tax collectors in seeking guidance.

“Do violence to no man” means no extortion by intimidation.

Wages (Greek opsonia) means soldiers’ pay.
