Theological / Devotional

The people were in expectation (Greek prosdokao), eagerly anticipating the Messiah’s coming. John’s message stirred the nation, reaching even remote villages.

“All men” knew about John, and many came to hear him. Josephus noted the crowds were greatly moved, and Herod feared a rebellion.

“Mused” means they were reasoning or deliberating.

They wondered whether John was the Christ. Though John performed no miracles and was of the tribe of Levi, not Judah, many were ready to accept him as Messiah. The Sanhedrin investigated him. His powerful message led people to mistake him for the Messiah.
