Commentary on Luke 3:19

Theological / Devotional

Herod the tetrarch imprisoned John the Baptist because John rebuked his marriage to Herodias, his niece and wife of his half-brother. This imprisonment likely occurred months or a year after Jesus’ baptism, around Passover A.D. 29. John remained imprisoned until early spring A.D. 30 and was beheaded shortly before Passover.

Herodias was a granddaughter of Herod the Great. Herod Antipas divorced his wife, daughter of King Aretas, to marry Herodias.

Philip mentioned here was Herod Antipas’ half-brother, disinherited and living privately.
