Theological / Devotional

Herod added the imprisonment of John to his other evils. John was imprisoned in early spring A.D. 29 after about two years of ministry. Herod feared John’s influence might incite rebellion. Josephus does not mention Herodias as the reason for imprisonment, likely because it was a private matter.

John was imprisoned at Machaerus fortress in Peraea, east of the Dead Sea. Some scholars question Josephus’ accuracy regarding the location of the birthday celebration related to John’s beheading.
