Theological / Devotional“Said he” literally means “he kept saying” or “used to say,” indicating John repeatedly emphasized the same theme. Luke’s report summarizes John’s preaching rather than quoting a single sermon.
Multitude (Greek ochloi) means crowds.
They came forth to be baptized (see Matthew 3:5-6).
Generation (Greek gennemata) means “brood,” addressed specifically to Pharisees and Sadducees. John’s vivid imagery recalls Old Testament prophets and Christ’s parables, with rapid succession of figures: highway repairers, vipers, fruits, an ax, slave boy removing sandals, baptism of fire, threshing floor with winnowing shovel, grain, and chaff.
“Who hath warned?” is a sharp inquiry questioning the Pharisees’ and Sadducees’ motives, which were foreign to the kingdom’s principles. They would be as unwelcome as vipers on the threshing floor.
The wrath to come refers to coming judgment (see Matthew 3:7; Luke 3:18).
