Theological / Devotional

Straitly charged. Gr. embrimaomai, “to be deeply moved,” “to admonish urgently.” This word is translated “groaned” in John 11:33 and “murmured” in Mark 14:5, and always indicates strong emotion. The gospel writers use it of Christ on but two other occasions (see Matt. 9:30 and John 11:33, 38). Only in rare instances did Jesus assume a stern attitude (see Matt. 23:13-33; John 2:13-17; cf. DA 353). The reasons of Jesus’ apparent severity here are made clear in Mark 1:45.
