She went forth. Apparently the statement that Salome was “before instructed [literally, “prompted”] of her mother” (Matt. 14:8) means before she asked, not before she danced. Salome knew nothing of her mother’s sinister design at the time she was dancing before Herod and his guests. She simply became the instrument in the hands of her bloodthirsty mother.

What shall I ask? Rather, “What shall I ask for myself?” There would have been no point to this question if Salome had known all the time what to ask, nor would she, in fact, have needed to leave the king’s presence.
