Theological / Devotional

Immediately. According to Josephus (. Antiquities xviii. 5. 2), John was imprisoned in the fortress of Machaerus (see on Luke 3:19, 20). The dispatch with which John was beheaded makes it almost certain that the birthday celebration was held in some place near the prison chamber.

Beheaded him. Herod feared John (v. 20), he feared the people (Matt. 14:5), he feared Herodias. He was a slave to his fears even though these fears were contradictory. Superstitiously, Herod feared John as much when he was dead as he had feared him when he was alive (see Mark 6:14, 16, 20).
