Commentary on Matthew 12:40

Theological / Devotional

For as Jonas. Christ’s resurrection was the supreme miracle of His mission to earth, and to that great future event Christ now directs His critics.

Three days. See pp. 248-251.

Whale’s. Gr. ketos, meaning any sea monster or fish of great size, not necessarily a “whale” (see on Jonah 1:17 ; 2:1). The constellation Cetus represents a sea monster, its name being simply an English transliteration of the Gr. ketos.

Heart of the earth. Christ here no doubt refers to the time He spent in Joseph’s tomb, from late Friday afternoon to early Sunday morning.
