Gennesaret. Evidently the region, or plain, of Gennesaret is here intended rather than some town by that name. Concerning the Plain of Gennesaret see on Luke 5:1. In ancient times the city of Chinnereth was situated along the shore of this plain, and some have held that the name Gennesaret came originally from Chinnereth. So far as is known, the city of Chinnereth, whose ruins are known today as Tell el ‘Oreimeh, had ceased to exist by the time of Christ.
