Exegetical

Thus it is written. The quotation (v. 6) given by the chief priests and scribes does not agree entirely with either the Hebrew text of Micah 5:2 or with the LXX. It seems, rather, to be a paraphrase, or possibly from a Targum, or their own free rendering at the moment. That the import of Micah 5:2 was commonly known, even among the people, is clear from John 7:42.
