Theological / Devotional

Agreed with the labourers. In Oriental lands bargaining is an essential and expected part of any transaction involving goods or services. See on John 9:4.

A penny. Gr. deflation, the Roman denarius, a silver coin weighing about .125 oz. troy, or 3.89 g. (see p. 49). It was worth considerably more than today’s “penny” (though only a fraction of a dollar). It had much more purchasing power then than now, however, for it represented the usual day’s wage for the ordinary laborer. The working day in those times was from dawn to dusk.
