Theological / Devotional

Fear the people. Fear of physical violence seems to have controlled the minds of the leaders (see Luke 20:6). If popular opinion turned against them, their influence over the people would be lost. Position and influence meant more to them than truth. Public sentiment was strongly in favor of John the Baptist, and now similarly favored Jesus (see Mark 12:37; DA 594).
