Commentary on Matthew 21:46

Theological / Devotional

Lay hands on him. That is, to arrest Him. As they saw it, Jesus was defying their authority, and they could scarcely restrain themselves from carrying out, immediately, their designs.

Feared the multitude. Public sentiment was now strongly in favor of Jesus. Each encounter He had with the Jewish leaders must have diminished the respect in which the people, generally, held these perverse ecclesiastics.
