Matthew 25:8

Said unto the wise. The foolish maidens had not learned the important lesson of accepting responsibility for themselves. They had fallen into the habit of relying on others to make up for their own lack of foresight.

Of your oil. That is, “some of your oil.” The preparation of the foolish virgins had not been thorough and in earnest, but superficial.

Are gone out. Literally, “are going out.” The time of test had come, but their preparation proved superficial and inadequate. They had no reserves on which to draw to meet the unexpected emergency. They had made a promising start but were not prepared to endure unto the end (see on eh. 24:13).
