Matthew 5:10

Persecuted. Refers primarily to persecution for forsaking the world for the kingdom. Since sin’s entrance, there has been enmity between Christ and Satan, the kingdom of heaven and the world, God’s servants and Satan’s (Gen. 3:15; Rev. 12:7-17). This conflict continues until the kingdoms of this world become Christ’s (Rev. 11:15; Dan. 2:44; 7:27). Paul warned believers they must enter the kingdom “through much tribulation” (Acts 14:22). Citizens of the kingdom may expect tribulation (John 16:33) because their character and conduct witness against the world’s evil (1 John 3:12). Christ was persecuted; His loyal subjects will be too (John 15:20). “All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Tim. 3:12).

Theirs is the kingdom. The same promise as in v. 3 to those sensing spiritual need. “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him” (2 Tim. 2:12; Dan. 7:18,27). The first and last beatitudes assure membership in the kingdom. Those who meet the eight qualifications are worthy of a place in the kingdom.
