Theological / Devotional

Revile. Greek oneidizo, “to reproach,” “to slander,” “to insult” (see Luke 6:22). Matt. 5:11,12 is not an additional beatitude but explains forms of persecution.

For my sake. Christians suffer for Christ’s name. Early Christians rejoiced to be “counted worthy to suffer shame for his name” (Acts 5:41; 1 Peter 2:19-23; 3:14; 4:14). Christ warned disciples they would be “hated of all men for my name’s sake” (Matt. 10:22), but “whoever loseth his life for my sake shall find it” (Matt. 10:39). Christians must expect to suffer for Christ (Phil. 1:29).
