Theological / Devotional

Ye. Emphatic pronoun: “Ye are the light of the world.”

Light. Symbolizes divine presence (Gen. 1:3; 3:24). John calls Jesus “the light of men” (John 1:4-9). Jesus referred to Himself as “the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5). Christians become reflectors of that light. Messianic prophecy calls Jesus “a great light” (Isa. 9:2) and “Sun of righteousness” (Mal. 4:2; Luke 1:79). Jesus spoke in the morning as the sun rose (MB 38; Ps. 19:4-6). The Twelve and future citizens are to let their light shine, dispelling sin’s darkness (John 1:4,7,9).

World. Greek kosmos (Matt. 4:8).

Set on a hill. Palestinian cities were commonly on hills, visible from afar. From Jesus’ place, many towns and villages were visible (MB 39).
