Commentary on Matthew 5:25

Theological / Devotional

Agree. Greek eunoeo, “to be well inclined,” “kindly,” “friendly.” To agree implies changing attitude toward a former adversary.

Adversary. Greek antidikos, “opponent,” here a lawsuit opponent. Context implies the adversary is the accuser; the speaker is the defendant. Compare Luke 12:58,59.

In the way. While on the way to court. Jesus advises settling out of court.

The officer. Greek huperetes, “subordinate officer,” used for synagogue assistants (Luke 4:20), John Mark (Acts 13:5), and gospel ministers (Luke 1:2; Acts 26:16; 1 Cor. 4:1).
