Theological / Devotional

Thy right eye. Compare Matt. 18:8,9. Jesus goes beyond motive to the sensory avenues through which sin enters—optic, auditory, and other nerves (AA 518).

Refusing to see, hear, taste, smell, or touch sin’s suggestions helps avoid sinful thoughts. Banishing evil thoughts immediately prevents habitual sin patterns. Jesus lived sinlessly because “there was in Him nothing that responded to Satan’s sophistry” (DA 123).

Offend. Greek skandalizo, “to snare,” “to trip up,” “to cause to stumble,” from skandalon, a trap stick (Rom. 11:9; 14:13; 1 John 2:10; Rev. 2:14).

Pluck it out. Figurative speech urging resolute willpower to control thoughts. Better to live maimed than lose eternal life. Job “made a covenant with his eyes” (Job 31:1; 1 Cor. 9:27).
