Put away. Greek apoluo, “to set free,” “to release,” here “to divorce.”

A writing of divorcement. Greek apostasion, “certificate of divorce,” from aphistemi, “to separate.” English “apostasy” derives from this root. Divorce was not God’s original plan but provisionally allowed due to “hardness of heart” (Matt. 19:7,8). Moses regulated divorce to prevent abuses (Deut. 24:1-4). Christian marriage rests on Gen. 2:24, not Deut. 24:1.
