Theological / Devotional

Fornication. Greek porneia, general term for illicit sexual relations. The liberal school of Hillel allowed divorce for trivial causes; the conservative school of Shammai interpreted “some uncleanness” as “immodest” (Mishnah Gittin 9.10). Jesus allowed divorce only for marital infidelity. He restored marriage’s original purity and beauty.

Marriage was designed to bless and uplift humanity. Husbands and wives should apply principles of love (1 Cor. 13:4-7) and rely on Christ’s grace to solve difficulties. Changing dispositions, not spouses, is the Christian solution.

A wife put away who marries another commits adultery, as her first marriage remains valid before God (Mark 10:11,12). Jesus rejected rabbinical traditions permitting divorce for any cause.
