Theological / Devotional

Compel. Greek angareuo, “to press into service.” Related noun aggaros, Persian loanword for royal courier. In Roman times, aggaros referred to compulsory military transport service. Epictetus advised yielding to such service to avoid worse harm. In Matt. 27:32 and Mark 15:21, aggaros describes Simon compelled to carry Jesus’ cross. Jesus refers to Jewish civilians impressed by Roman soldiers to carry baggage for one mile. Christians should give double service cheerfully. Capernaum was a Roman garrison town; soldiers passing nearby may have inspired Jesus’ words (MB 70). Jews hoped the Messiah would humble Rome; Jesus counseled submission.
