Theological / Devotional

Peacemakers. Greek eirenopoioi, from eirene, “peace,” and poieo, “to make.” Christ refers especially to those who bring men into harmony with God (DA 302-305; MB 28). The carnal mind is “enmity against God” (Rom. 8:7), but Christ, the Master Peacemaker and “Prince of Peace” (Isa. 9:6,7; Micah 5:5), showed that God is not man’s enemy. Justified by faith, believers have peace with God (Rom. 5:1). Jesus left His peace with His followers (John 14:27; 2 Thess. 3:16).

In Semitic thought, peace (Hebrew shalom) means completeness, soundness, prosperity, well-being. Jesus likely used this meaning. Christians are to be at peace among themselves (1 Thess. 5:13), “follow peace with all men” (Heb. 12:14), pray for peace, work for peace, and support peaceful society.

Children of God. Literally “sons of God.” Jews considered themselves God’s children (Deut. 14:1; Hosea 1:10), a concept Christians also embrace (1 John 3:1). To be a son of God means to resemble Him in character (1 John 3:2; John 8:44). Peacemakers are sons of God because they are at peace with Him and lead others to peace.
