Theological / Devotional

Appear not. There is nothing gloomy about the Christian religion, and the Christian who is gloomy in either word or appearance misrepresents the character of God (MB 88). It is a joyous privilege to be the sons of God (1 John 3:1, 2), and a gloomy countenance gives us the appearance of being orphans rather than sons.

But unto thy Father. Fasting is purely a matter between a man and his God, not between a man and his fellow men.

Reward thee openly. See on v. 4.
