Theological / Devotional

Hewn down. John the Baptist had spoken of “the axe” being “laid unto the root of the trees” (see on ch. 3:10). In a later parable Christ again used the figure of cutting down a worthless tree (Luke 13:6-9).

Cast into the fire. See on ch. 3:10. In the fires of the last day the evil fruit, or “works,” shall be “burned up” (2 Peter 3:10-12).
