Commentary on Matthew 9:11

Theological / Devotional

I say unto thee. Gr. soi lego, “to thee I say.” The order of the words in Greek emphasizes here the one to whom Jesus was speaking. The words of v. 10 He addressed to the unbelieving scribes; now, as a proof to them, He turned to the paralytic and said, “To thee I say, Arise.” The power to heal physically was evidence of the authority to heal spiritually.

Take up thy bed. The sufferer had been carried to Jesus on his bed; he now leaves the presence of Jesus carrying his bed, an evidence of the great transformation that had occurred.

Go thy way into thine house. That is, “Go home” (RSV).
