Make thee bald, and poll thee for thy delicate children; enlarge thy baldness as the eagle; for they are gone into captivity from thee.

Theological / Devotional

Make thee bald. A symbol of mourning (see Amos 8:10). Jerusalem is called upon to mourn for her children who are taken away into exile.

Poll. Hebrew gazaz, “to cut the hair.” The clause is parallel with “make thee bald.”

Eagle. Hebrew nesher, which is used to designate both an eagle and a vulture. Here a bald-headed vulture is probably intended.
