Commentary on Nehemiah 5:3

Theological / Devotional

That we might buy corn. Perhaps, with the LXX, “therefore give us corn [grain],” not that they desired an outright gift, but an adjustment of the economic situation that occasioned their plight.

Because of the dearth. Some claimed relief because of a famine, now past, which had compelled them to mortgage their fields, vineyards, and houses. The plaintiffs therefore belonged to a class that once possessed considerable property, and who lived outside the city. The situation resembles that described in Isaiah 5:8. The gathering of the land into the hands of the rich was not a new situation.
