Commentary on Nehemiah 6:11

Theological / Devotional

To save his life. Literally, “and live” (RSV). Nehemiah probably had in mind the command of Numbers 18:7, that “the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.” The very fact that Shemaiah proposed a course of action contrary to the revealed will of God was sufficient evidence that he was a false prophet (see Genesis 3:1-5; Matthew 4:3-10).
