Commentary on Nehemiah 8:5

Theological / Devotional

All the people stood up. In public assemblies the Jews commonly sat to listen, though they occasionally remained standing and stood for prayer. It is not to be supposed that they stood during the whole of the six hours of reading and instruction. Rabbinical tradition claims that from the days of Moses it had been a custom with the Israelites to stand at the reading of the law.
