Commentary on Nehemiah 9:3

Theological / Devotional

Stood up. That is, they remained in their places, and did not leave until the work of confession and penitence was complete. The Jews confessed their sins kneeling (Ezra 9:5), or prostrate (Ezra 10:1).

One fourth part. Anciently the Jews divided the day into four parts, each of about three hours’ duration. A similar division of the night is frequently alluded to in the New Testament (Mark 6:48 ; 13:35; etc.).
