Commentary on Philippians 1:26

Theological / Devotional

Rejoicing. Gr. kauchema, “a boast,” “object of boasting.” The word denotes that of which one glories, the ground for glorying, not the act of glorying.

In Jesus Christ. This clause defines the reason for the increase in their joy — it derives from their connection with Christ, and not merely their association with Paul.

For me. Rather, “in me,” that is, in connection with Paul, who, as the leading representative of the church, was the ground, or cause, of their rejoicing.

Coming. Gr. parousia (see on Matthew 24:3). The apostle confidently anticipated that his release and subsequent visit to the Philippians would bring genuine joy to his friends.
