Theological / Devotional

Provoke to emulation. Gr. parazelod, the word translated “provoke to jealousy” in v. 11 and in ch. 10:19. It is best to preserve the same translation in all three instances, in order not to obscure the connection with the original prophecy of Deut. 32:16, 21, quoted in Rom. 10:19.

My flesh. That is, my kinsmen, my countrymen (cf. ch. 9:3). Paul’s aim is to stir up in his kinsmen a desire to share in the blessings that were first offered to them but which are now being enjoyed in such a large measure by the Gentiles.
