Romans 12:18

As much as lieth in you. Literally, “as to that which proceeds from you,” meaning, “so far as it depends on you.” The connection with the previous verse is quite apparent. So far as the Christian is concerned, he is to do everything he can to maintain peace. But there are times when fidelity to principle may necessitate his incurring the antagonism of others. Therefore Paul adds the qualification, “if it be possible.” The record of Paul’s own life, which was one of almost constant conflict, shows that it is not always possible to be at peace. In a world whose prince is Satan, soldiers of Christ must not expect that all will be peace. Nevertheless, the Christian must see to it that whenever the peace is broken, it is not his fault.
