Commentary on Romans 16:2

Theological / Devotional

As becometh saints. That is, in a manner worthy of saints.

Assist. Gr. paristēmi, literally, “to stand by.” Both this word and the one translated “business” (pragma; cf. 1 Cor. 6:1) are terms used in legal proceedings. It is possible that Phoebe had legal business in Rome, and that the members of the church there could be of some help to her. As a “succourer of many” it is evident that she was not in need of assistance on account of poverty.

Succourer. Gr. prostatis, “helper,” “protector.” The word occurs only here in the NT. Phoebe may have been a woman in a position to help her fellow believers not only financially but politically and socially as well.
