Theological / Devotional

Gaza. Four of the five principal cities of the Philistines are named here to represent the whole of that country (see Amos 1:6–8). Like Amos, Zephaniah omits mention of Gath (see on Amos 1:6).

Noon. Since this was the hottest part of the day, a time when the enemy would be least likely to attack, the expression “at the noon day” evidently means “unexpectedly,” or “suddenly” (see Jer. 15:8).
