Commentary on 1 Samuel 4:7

Theological / Devotional

God is come. The Philistines, who had many gods, clearly recognized the difference between the God of Israel and their gods. Though in v. 7 the word for God is in the plural, ’Elohim, the verb is singular. But in v. 8 the verb is plural — a clear contrast between the true God and the gods in their temple at Ashdod.
