Theological / Devotional

Forty years. The time Hebrews spent between Egypt and Canaan (Ex. 16:35; Num. 14:33, 34; Deut. 8:2-4).

Suffered he. Textual evidence supports reading “he suffered,” “he endured,” and “he bore,” “he nourished.” This variant is found in LXX manuscripts of Deut. 1:31, where Hebrew means “he bore thee.” Paul likely referred to God’s gracious care in the wilderness rather than mere forbearance. The connection with Deut. 1:31 may not be coincidental, as that passage may have been part of the Scripture reading before Paul spoke (Vol. V, p. 57; Acts 13:15; cf. v. 17).
